I am not sure about the budget, but this movie definitely dosen't look cheap. I am watch it now while typing. The photography skill and color grading and sound is top quality. Actors are all good. No one minute is wasted.
This film has been described as a cross between The Thing and Alien, and I can certainly see that. The special effects are of the same quality. However, it also has a Lovecraft them running through it, like At the Mountains of Madness. Having watched a lot of horror movies, this is new and visually impressive.
This is a very cool take on the Thing - with it inhabiting the earth's inner core. The FX are super rad in this, and the style and mood are very cool. Captures the suffocating atmosphere of 80's Russia (I imagine) very well, as that's the obvious metaphor here - along with fear of the unknown, and an innate desire to conquer said beasts. Great ending as well - definitely satisfying, if you're into this neo-body horror genre.
This has some amazing body horror elements, and apocalyptic fear woven into the plot. This as well as the dark and confined settings makes for a great film. The pacing gets a bit muddled but generally makes its efforts to move forward. Production values are high. My version was fully dubbed in English; this at times appeared to give some visual aspect of being out of sync, and this may have also then affected the cohesion of how I saw the film as a whole. The third act is powerful (but also a bit muddled), but I feel it pulled the movie together nicely. The story is a standard science fiction plotting, done well in past movies and tv. (The X-Files has an excellent episode of this.) So it joins this company well, just not with much originality or pizzazz. Still a decent watch.
In short, a boring Russian version of "The Thing" wannabe.
The Superdeep chamber horror shot in Russia. The film is clearly level B, the budget of the film is very small. Everything is shot as cheap as possible, but camera work stands out. CGI certainly looks ridiculous for 2020, it would be better if it were not. The plot is simple and linein. Unfortunately, there is no horror here. For a category B film, everything is shot normally. I sincerely wish Arseniy Shukhin success in future projects. It is better to remove horror B than an infinite number of cheap Russian comedies.
