Not a laugh nor a fright did I get from this supposed kids Comedy Monster drama. The young star of it, Matilda Gross who plays Nelly, is a good little actress (but I am not so sure how she would be in something else...but rumours say she will be back for a sequel) and she is the only one holding this story together. Everyone else is mediocre to less than good/average acting skills; nobody seemed to have a clue and looked quite bored! It could have done with someone at the helm who knows what kids want and how to push it in a kids film. I'm not sure if the worlds children will go for this in a big way but, other mediocre kids films have done okay and this may get lucky. It gets a 5 from me for Matilda Gross and the scenery/props! I don't think I will return for the sequel however!
As a middle aged dad who prefers action and thrillers, I avoid family movies. But my daughter enjoyed this movie and I found myself enjoying it too. I laughed out loud a few times. It has a good story and likeable characters. There are familiar themes about acceptance and change, but its sincere with heartfelt acting. I highly recommend this family movie to anyone who is tired of loud Hollywood movies and too much CGI, and just wants to watch a well-made movie with meaning.
The second half of the movie was slow and predictable, with dumb dancing scenes and terrible story. There is a really unnecessary scene with a fully naked guy showing his genitals for no reason. This was supposed to be a family movie, I would not recommend this movie for children.
Kids of all ages can enjoy this movie with a nice ending message.
