In Macao, he showcased his skill, hand speed, and power, stopping Joe Hanks in the fourth round of a heavyweight showdown between two rising prospects. Ruiz (20–0, 14 KOs) had Hanks looking outclassed through the first two rounds, his rapid hands proving far too sharp for the slower Hanks (21–1, 14 KOs). Hanks did rally with a solid third round, landing a couple of heavy shots, but Ruiz shrugged them off without trouble. In the fourth, Ruiz struck suddenly with a right hand that caught Hanks completely off guard, then followed with a left that sent the big man crashing to the canvas like a falling tree. The referee’s count stretched to what felt like “nine and three-quarters,” but it wasn’t ten, so Hanks was allowed to continue. Moments later, though, Ruiz pounced again, dropped him a second time, and sealed the finish at 1:41 of the round.
