action
This is a low budget sci fi thriller kinda cool anyway
4/8/18. Terrific action thriller. Good special effects adds to the excitement of this movie. Worth catching!
"...and to fight is to live", that's the military code "the resistance" lives by in their war against alien mech invaders. I'm hard to please but this was a good movie. The mechs were some cool tech and how their DEWs just vaporize people, wow. And the film's overall grittiness lends authenticity to it. Joe Miale writes and directs his first feature lengther and does really well with it. Berenice Marlohe ("Nadia") is a pleasant addition but just when "Bo" ("Halt & Catch Fire"'s Lee Pace) tries to hit it, the aliens interfere, d'oh! The ending just concludes a single skirmish, not a battle, and not the war but makes you wonder how good a tv series this could be. The cost of VFX usually keeps this off tv but with vast efficiencies in computing now coupled with streamers doing 6-10 ep seasons, there's really no reason why a VFX series shouldn't regularly be on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc at this point.
Low budget science fiction thrillers are ten a penny these days, and way too many of them turn out to be absolute rubbish. Not so REVOLT, an engaging little effort that comes to us courtesy of South Africa. The film reminds one of DISTRICT 9 to a degree, with a sun-scorched and devastated landscape patrolled by hulking CGI robots (the good news is that animation is passable here). The main character is an amnesic soldier who has to fight his way across the landscape, encountering violent rebel groups at every turn. This film benefits from a simple story, a fast pace, and plenty of action. The budgetary constraints are evident but the cinematography is nice, which makes all the difference. Jason Flemyng has a small but memorable cameo.
Revolt is one of those middle budget sci-fi efforts you'll see on Netflix much alike the superior Kill Switch (2017) and alike that this also stars the excellent French actress Bérénice Marlohe. The film is British made which surprised me. Honestly without football hooligans or quintessential Englishmen I can rarely identify them as such, thankfully that makes up 90%+ of English films. It tells the story of a world overrun by an alien force and one soldier trying to survive through it. Suffering from amnesia and with a weird tattoo on his arm he goes on a dangerous quest for answers. While the comparable Kill Switch was a smart movie this relies on the tried and tested formula of fighting aliens, explosions, spacecraft and all the usual tropes. Revolt is a run of the mill film, one of those that is harmless enough to spend 90 minutes on but by the next day you'll have likely forgotten it. The Good: Bérénice Marlohe The Bad: Very cliched
