Benedict Cumberbatch is the eponymous, on the spectrum artist, dabbling in all sorts of ideas - writing opera, playwriting and inventing this and that. He falls in love and marries Claire Foy, who encourages him to spend more time on the thing he does best, painting cat characters, for which he becomes famous. This is an occasionally funny, but mostly very sweet and touching love story - prepare for tears. Benedict is good at this sort of thing and gives another fine turn as the mentally deteriorating artist, desperately in love with Foy, who is herself as good as ever, but who seems to do this type of role quite a lot eg Breathe. About two thirds in, admittedly to reflect Louis' mental state, the film goes slightly off the rails which slightly jarred with what until then was a gentle, amusing, but relatively straightforward drama. Otherwise a sweet film worth catching.
It's full of texture and imperfections. Together, those elements or we call it misfortunes create an interesting piece of art, more characteristic to the soul.
It's hard to remember that sometimes. And there are no punches pull in this gripping tale of genius and madness. The film does a great job of oscillating between the wonderful moments of joy and the heart breaking moments of agony. And Cumberbatch in particular shows yet another facet to his prodigious talent.
