The film reflects true events, but with artistic fiction, as the authors themselves stipulate in the beginning of the film. Well, this is understandable, because the film is not documentary, although in the end we are presented with some real facts about the participants of the robbery.
"The Heist of the Century" is a Biography - Action movie in which we watch a group of thieves robbing the Banco Río branch in Acassuso in 2006. This is considered the most smart and famous bank heist of Argentina. I enjoyed this movie because it was based on a real story and it was very interesting. The plot was also interesting and it contained plenty of information regarding the robbery and how it was performed. The direction which was made by Ariel Winograd was good and he succeeded on presenting very well both his main characters and the plot. The interpretations of Diego Peretti who played as Fernando Araujo, Guillermo Francella who played as Luis Mario Vitette Sellanes, Mariano Argento who played as Debauza and Mario Alarcón who played as Fiscal were very good and their combination worked very well. To sum up, I have to say that "The Heist of the Century" is an interesting movie and I strongly recommend everyone to watch it.
I give this an 8 because it is everything other reviewers have said: well acted, fast paced at times, and absorbing. For once, the subtitles are clear and well presented without cluttering up , or losing screen space. My one thought is that it seems too familiar despite it being advertised as based on a true Bank raid in 2006. For example: escaping from the bank through their tunnel was the main plot line in "Daylight Robbery" (UK, 2008); and, using the sewers is common enough "Sewers of Gold", (UK,1979) and "Loophole", (Uk,1981). In the latter film the gang also make their way out of the sewers using a parked van to mask their movements. So, did the real life robbers see those films, or did the makers add those elements in tribute? Who cares, it is still a great film and worth watching and cheering on.
I always thought that movies made after real life cases are the best. And in this case I have the same opinion. The film is full of action from the first to the last moment, it is full of suspense and it is very well played. I can't understand why these smart thieves didn't plan anything for life after the theft ...If the thieves were brilliant about breaking in, they turned out to be stupid about what they had to do after the break-in.
El robo del siglo is an entertaining crime caper flick. The standard elements are present: for some unknown reason a large group of convicts get together to "mastermind" the crime of the century. Of course, knowing that they are all ex-cons provides good reason for suspecting that they will not end up pulling it off. The usual sequence of events follows the apprehension of one of the perpetrators.... They all fall like dominoes, but have been portrayed so sympathetically that the viewer feels happy when they are finally released from prison. A genre crime caper story, but pleasant enough.
Despite some tepid moments, the overall result is nice and amusing. What a clever heist! Nobody cares about banks, and filmmakers know that.
