Amazon did a great job on this documentary. Although we know the end of the story, the film makes you feel like part of the campaign, cheering Pete on all the way. We get to see the excitement and challenge of campaigning and realize that it took a lot of courage, and, yes, audacity, for Pete to run for president. We also get insight into his life with Chasten. These are genuine people who one would welcome as friends. The movie is well worth watching. Pete was a refreshing voice of optimism after four years of vitriol. I suspect that all the low ratings come from trolls who probably didn't even watch the film. Anyone who did would at least recognize that it is very well made.
Watching Mayor Pete behind the scenes with his staff and in private moments with his husband and family only increased my fascination and admiration of this talented and unusual young politician. Not many public figures would benefit from such a lengthy and - yes - intrusive scrutiny. But Pete Buttigieg didn't play to the camera or put on a politician's mask. We know about his intelligence and deep intellectual insight - here we also witnessed his emotional intelligence, his empathy, his fierce determination to understand the lives and problems of the diverse group of voters he was seeking to represent. Pete Buttigieg is naturally reserved, an introvert, but he was not afraid to show in glimpses his vulnerability and emotions. That is admirable and shows his inner strength and robustness. At one point Pete said that the deeper his feelings the less he showed them. One positive aspect of the documentary (out of many) is that it visualized his feelings rather than verbalizing them - e.g. Through the many close-up of Pete thinking. Altogether a beautiful, hopeful and calm documentary in a time of chaos and shouting.
I tried to watch this and give it a chance, but thus us just a long, long campaign piece that has no relevance with reality, especially the way we are heading.
Unlike the standard documentary type about a political campaign, with competitors set up as enemies and the set-up seeming to make this a campaigning vehicle, this film takes the audience into the realm of relationships between the candidate and his spouse, his campaign team, and the internal questions and conflicts. I found this much more satisfying and insightful than documentaries that treat campaigns as if they were major league sports events. I came away from this with even greater respect for the main figures. Now I would like to see the other films by this producer/ director/ writer team, too.
It was a historic campaign centered around belonging. Pete gave so many people hope and this movie was such a wonderful reminder of why people stepped up and supported him. Bring tissues because you will definitely cry!
This is a masterpiece! I discovered it on amazon prime . It shows you how an unknown gay mayor of a small town became a household name and a runner for office .
An insightful look at much needed, well balance, conscientious truly thoughtful human leadership rarely seen in modern and recent US politics. Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a Statesman who will be around for a long time. Rarely has someone of this nature decided to dedicate his life at such a young age to the service of others. Buttigieg from his humble beginning offers hope for the future of U. S. leadership throughout the world. A++ I look forward to seeing much more of this bright and caring person..
I like pete and even if I have seen some of the clips in the past I still enjoyed watching him all over again. He is one politician to reckon with. It still gives me chill when he first declared publicly his intent to run for President of the United States.
Here is a man that is not effusive, a bit of an introvert (when I am myself) and not your typical politician by any stretch of the imagination. But certain things he said in this, and the incredibly deep thoughtfulness those things are evidence of, to me were breathtaking. Shallow and boring he is not. He's the real deal on so many levels. Plus Chasten is wonderful. That word play related to the vegan sign in the audience before Pete goes out on stage made me laugh out loud.
