I recommand it for those who love historical films because it was really interesting. I read that Du Barry was supposed to be blonde and younger but it didn't disturbed me as I'm not familiar with her. And nonetheless, I think that Maïwenn did a terrific job in portraying her so I don't have complaints. Plus, I grew up watching S. Coppola's Marie Antoinette and her Du Barry was much more different (vulgar and nasty and a brunette), so I guess it's different perspective. Johnny Depp was very astounding, he had such a presence that you'd really believe that he is the king. His French was really good, maybe you can see some hint of an accent but it was subtil and he doesn't have that much lines. He mainly shows his emotions with his body and his eyes. I love when an actor conveys feelings with other things than words. Benjamin Lavernhe really surprised me, his character is my favorite from this movie. And it was good to see Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory, India Hair... I liked to see them in that kind of movie especially Richard. Also, I must say that some moments of the movie are humoristic, which I didnt expect but it added a lightness to the characters that I've appreciated a lot. And finally, the cinematography was really beautiful and the music as well. Loved all of it 👌🏻😊

I am not really a connoisseur of period drama movies. However, many parts of the movie felt off to me regardless. I am already not too big on movies where the Director is also the main character. I do not want to suggest there's an ulterior motive in the Director casting herself in the position of a character that was, historically, extremely scandalous and almost half her age. But her romance with Johnny Deep's character felt really undeveloped and unrealistic. Side characters comment on Louis XV.and his "preferences", but none of his actions really follow their descriptions, making him quite a flat character. His job in the movie is to fall in love in Maiween's character - and that's about it. Plot progression is a major flaw in this movie. It's really missing the "drama" in drama, the tension is almost never there. There's only really one serious conflict and it's resolved rather unceremoniously. Reading the actual story of these characters, I see lots of potential for using and developing side characters (especially Zamor), but all of them feel sidelined for the purpose of focusing on the romance - which doesn't really help the plot move along.

The backdrop of Versailles was magnificent enough but Maïwenn's portrayal of Madame du Barry was captivating. I honestly watched the film to see Johnny Depp's great comeback and his portrayal of King Louis XV was absolutely fine. His emotiveness added a complex element to the character that hasn't been portrayed in past films I've seen, but Maïwenn... oh! Maïwenn! Her Jeanne was captivating. Loved the costumes, the sets and the way the story was played. The chemistry between Depp and Maïwenn was awkward in a very intentional way. That's not a criticism, they felt l lovers in a world where that kind of emotion wasn't allowed. Their chemistry portrayed that beautifully. It's well worth a watch, especially if you enjoy period pieces. 8.5/10 - my second favorite Maïwenn film.
