.....because this is a pretty good creature feature that pays homage to IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA (1955) and GORGO (1961). In this wild opus, hard-working fisherman Shao Feng rescues a small mutated pink-colored octopus with four eyes. He finds himself working with a brilliant research scientist (a good-looking honeybabe, of course). There's a massive cephalopod with hundred-foot tentacles, a gang of mercenaries, the chairman of Greed Technologies who had been spearheading some unorthodox genetic experiments, a shark that jumps out of the ocean and almost chomps on Shao Feng, an underground installation that was built during the Second World War, and an explosion that destroys an island and kills off the oversized octopus. The Chinese film industry has been making science fiction, horror and monster movies of late. This is a welcome entry, and you can find it on YouTube's YOUKU MOVIE channel. I did.
I reckon if you are a fan of kaiju movies, you may be more inclined to find something to your liking here. For fans I should not even have to explain it, but Godzilla is one of the most famous kaiju - in case you're wondering what I'm raving on about. The CGI is decent I guess ... though it may be not even that for many who have been spoiled. And who knows how this ages ... cute small octopus (octopi?) aside, the movie is quite action packed, but also has room for romance and comedy. For some (quite a few actually, at least of those who have watched it up until this point) this may be enough ... others may yearn for more. But I guess if you watch a movie with the title "Big Octopus", you already know what you are going to get ...
