source: Stuck in Love.
My expectations about "Stuck in love" were high before entering the cinema where I saw it thanks to the trailer, the cast and the fact that I love the stories starred by writers because I aspire to be one. The director Josh Boone is new in the industry, but I am sure he did a very good job with the adequate pace and length for the movie. It is quite short and highly entertaining. Moreover, he took advantage of the most known actors in the cast making them act very well. He directed in a simple way, which was the best alternative. The photography is simple, but the proper one and the soundtrack is beautiful and full of charming songs that make watching this movie an incredible experience. The cast is composed by Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Lilly Collins, Nat Wolff and Patrick Schawenegger mainly. They are all very correct. I see much potential in the three youngest actor, was surprised by Arnold's son and did not expect less from Kinnear and Connelly, who are already good veterans in movies. Maybe, some more secondary actors could have done it better, but it does not matter at all. Each one has a defined role which they portray very well and in a believable way. The plot is another strong point to me because I like this genre and this type of stories. Furthermore, it is quite original taking into account it is about a divorced father who is a well-known actor and his son and daughter, who aspire to work as writers. His ex-wife married another man who is totally different from the writer. Their two children are finishing the school period and live some experiences that are nice and interesting. Although there are funny moments, I do not call this movie a comedy at all. It is just a family realistic drama with some romance and humour. In conclusion, the cast, music, direction in terms of length and pace and the story are the best elements in the movie ·Stuck in love". Maybe, some performances could have been a little bit better, but this is one of the best dramas of the year and of the best movies in general in 2013 so far. We cannot say it has too many topics. Also, it has some interesting twists that can make somebody cry. I specially like Jennifer Connelly as a pretty dramatic actress. Greg Kinnear perfectly fits his role and Logan Lerman is one the best of the range of ages. Nat Wolff was able to portray a starring role in a solid way. The ending is quite enjoyable, too. I think it is not predictable. I recommend this movie to all those enjoying stories about writers and family dramas and good movies in general and the author Stephen King. 8,5.
This film tells the story of a writer family, undergoing various issues with their love life. In "Stuck in Love", the father is stuck because the ex-wife left him for someone else. He is unable to write, locked in a standstill. The daughter and the son experiment with love. The plot is a mixture of romantic comedy and drama, but neither excels. In fact, I thought the plot is boring, especially the father subplot. The son subplot is not very good, in fact the scene where the whole family prematurely leaves the book launch party is almost absurd. The ending also bugs me - because it can be interpreted as a Hollywood ending, or a cruel thing happening to the father. I did not enjoy the film so much.
The problem with Stuck in Love is that you just want to enjoy a sweet little indie movie with good actors playing heartfelt characters. The cast delivers - although I would say Greg Kinnear's character is close to wooden - and you enjoy their precise rendition of the script. Jennifer Connelly is underused here but she is very convincing as usual. Lilly Collins is the only reason the movie gets going, and the only reason why you would want to keep on watching. Fortunately the actor playing her brother is good too so it does not take away from the global interest she sets. Well, there is nothing else. Take a less talented cast and the movie would be simply unwatchable. The stubborn falsehood of the script is here from the very start: What, a writer's block/mid-life crisis again? A peeping tom set to educate his children alone in their coming of age? A family where everybody is an artist, has the talent to get a book published before 20? A fantastic house on the beach and very little deep concerns about life except for their little private lives? This is all so fake. The worst is yet in the gross character arcs. I guess you can't really fault that kind of movie on originality. But having every single character just go from A to B in a snap and no real evolution, this is bordering insult to audiences. Yes the writer-director shoots the individual scenes OK - frankly I insist the cast does 99% of the job - but the editing, the lack of idea to suggest time convincingly - as in "meanwhile" or "3 months later". In the end - provided you got there - you just feel as if you had left a salesman throw his sales-pitch at you. He was not exactly boring, just uninteresting from the start; it was vaguely entertaining to watch him and now you have to speak and you just have to say no but you realise you lost that many minutes. So you feel angry about yourself: that was simply not worth watching, you knew from the start but some tiny detail kept you hooked (his outrageous tail, his eyes, his accent...). And if I watched Stuck in Love in the first place it is because there are many suckers who gobbled the whole bait and graded it above 7 because they can't tell a crude sales pitch from a refined storyline.
Well I was so excited when I rent this movie, just because the plot line seems nice, and there was a high score on IMDb. Also and especially because I love books, I love writer's stories on screen, I love love stories and I love Jennifer Connelly. But this movie was so full of clichés, so predictable in all the love stories that are described from the beginning to the end. Plus the books or stories they write don't seem that great, however they have no problem to be published. For me this movie was overrated, and maybe that is because US movies terribly lack authentic low-budget and simple movies...so when an American viewer sees a movie that only SEEMS to be simple, authentic, he/she tends to think it is great and special without giving it a more profound analysis...while it's actually kind of boring and cliché...I have seen much better with lowest rates.
