Harumafuji Kōhei (日馬富士), the Mongolian sumo wrestler who rose to the highest rank of Yokozuna, was once celebrated for his speed, technique, and fighting spirit. A true champion of 2011, Harumafuji won the hearts of fans worldwide with thrilling matches, including legendary bouts like Harumafuji vs Hakuho. His journey from junior sumo in Mongolia to the pinnacle of sumo wrestling was nothing short of incredible, and his legacy includes some of the best of Harumafuji performances the sport has seen. But behind the glory was a darker story. In 2017, the now-infamous Harumafuji incident shocked the sumo world: a violent assault on a fellow wrestler during a training tour. While the scandal rocked the sport and led to his resignation, many fans were stunned when Harumafuji initially refused to retire despite growing pressure from the Japan Sumo Association and public backlash. This decision—and the fallout that followed—forever changed his career and legacy, leading to an emotional Harumafuji retirement ceremony that closed one of sumo’s most controversial chapters. Whether you remember him as a sumo champion, a fierce rival, or the face of a scandal, Harumafuji’s story is essential to understanding modern sumo.
