Lopez seemed unsure of himself throughout the fight, struggling to find his rhythm against Sandor Martin — a crafty southpaw who stepped in on just three weeks’ notice. Despite that, Lopez escaped with a controversial split-decision win in their 10-round bout at Madison Square Garden. One judge scored the fight 95–94 for Martin, but the other two had it 96–93 and 97–92 in favor of Lopez, handing him the victory. ESPN’s unofficial card also had it 95–94 for Martin. Martin, 29, controlled the tempo behind a sharp jab and well-timed check hooks — one of which dropped Lopez in Round 2. He appeared to score another knockdown in Round 7, though the referee ruled it a slip. “The judges’ decision was a surprise,” said Martin, who revealed he broke his nose in the opening round after a clash of heads that left him bleeding for most of the fight. “I clearly won.
