197-pound Cael Sanderson of Iowa State ran his win streak to 133 consecutive matches with a first-period pin over Ryan Fulsaas. Cael earned the pin with a cradle after he toyed with Fulsaas. Before scoring his first takedown, Sanderson grabbed Fulsaas' leg and held it in the middle of the mat, as though he were walking a dog, before showing a grim smile and driving Fulsaas to the mat. "I knew we needed the team points, and I was just trying to help us get a win any way I possibly could," said Sanderson, who improved his career record to 133-0. "At the time, it gave us the lead in the dual heading into the break, which we felt could be a big momentum swing for us." After the match, the Cyclones held a 12-9 lead over the Hawkeyes at the midway point of the dual.
