This was a light sparring session with Kunihiro when he first started training with me. In Thailand, we don't spar very hard, instead we focus on timing, precision, and movement. We focus on reading each other's movements, trying out feints and tricks, and setting up attacks at the right opportunity. We don't spar to injure each other. We spar to observe how different sparring partners move, and learn how to respond and counter the different styles. Naturally I don't make it easy for Kunihiro to read my moves. My sparring rhythm is unpredictable - I circled around alot, led him on with feints, and striked when his defence was down. It was super frustrating for him. But I had been in his shoes before. Back when I was a young nak muay, my seniors gave me a really hard time. I learnt to calm my heart and relax my mind in difficult moments. Gradually, clarity and awareness would take over. Then I just ride the flow.
