One of the most effective ways to help athletes perform on the court is to adapt practice drills to mimic the 6v6 game. In the third of five drill demonstrations, Karch Kiraly, Head Coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team, guides coaches through a “Spotlight” drill. This drill entails starting with two scoreboards; one will track the normal rally scoring of the drill, the second will track a specific objective to the game. To win, a team needs to be leading in both scores. This drill allows players to think more strategically and adjust their playing style to meet the focus. Kiraly demonstrates the drill and how to provide useful feedback using a spotlight skill focus of line kills. 0:00 – Introduction 0:30 – Drill Overview: 6v6 Spotlight Concept 1:20 – Purpose of the Spotlight Focus 2:35 – Court Setup and Player Roles 3:45 – How the Spotlight Scoring Works 5:00 – Live Drill Demonstration 6:40 – Coaching Points and Emphasis 8:10 – Common Mistakes and Adjustments 9:30 – Connecting Spotlight Play to Match Situations 11:00 – Key Takeaways for Coaches
