One of the most effective ways to help athletes perform on the court is to adapt practice drills to mimic the 6v6 game. In the first of five drill demonstrations, Karch Kiraly, Head Coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team, guides coaches through a “Bonus” drill. This drill entails starting at a tied game-score and giving bonus points for a specific skill/focus being executed on the court; this drill allows players to think more strategically and adjust their playing style to meet the focus. The game is played as normal; however, to win the bonus point, the team must start with the serve and accomplish the aim during the rally. Kiraly demonstrates the drill and how to provide useful feedback using a bonus focus of coverage. 0:00 – Introduction 0:30 – Drill Overview: 6v6 Bonus Concept 1:20 – Purpose of the Bonus Scoring System 2:35 – Court Setup and Player Positions 3:45 – Scoring Rules Explained 5:00 – Live Drill Demonstration 6:40 – Coaching Points and Emphasis 8:10 – Common Mistakes to Watch For 9:30 – How This Drill Translates to Match Play 11:00 – Key Takeaways for Coaches
