The online game has over 6.5 million monthly users, and it looks like Valve is comfortable enough to take down the gated barrier to entry. They used the signup system to gradually increase the player base while improving infrastructure and the experience for new players. They stated that they, "recently completed a set of server management upgrades as well as released a huge number of enhancements to the new user experience."
