In the 2000 Professional League of Jiu-Jitsu, back in 2000, Antonio Nino Schembri stepped up to the heavyweight division and took on a game Otavio Tata Duarte. One of the most exciting grapplers to have ever stepped on a mat, Antonio Schembri also known as ‘Nino’ Schembri is a jiu jitsu black belt under Carlos Gracie Junior, who blasted into the BJJ scene in the mid 1990’s competing for the Gracie Barra academy. Nino Schembri quickly made a name for himself as the king of the omoplata, a game he developed making better use of his highly flexible and offensive guard game, being also one of the first grapplers recorded using the ‘lasso guard’ and the ‘rubber guard’. He is considered by many (BJJ Heroes included) as one of the best guard players to have ever competed in the sport.
