Both addition and subtraction have to do with parts and a total. We can draw a bar model to illustrate addition and subtraction equations, and vice versa: write various addition and subtraction sentences from the given bar model. Secondly in this lesson we look at terminology related to addition and subtraction: addend, sum, minuend, subtrahend, and difference. These are tied in with simple expressions and equations. In this second part, we tackle two word problems more. The first one involves a ratio and a difference between two quantities. The second one involves fractional parts, a change in the situation, and a given ratio. The first part of the lesson can be found here:

I solve two word problems that involve ratios, each time with the help of a bar model or diagram - Singapore Math style. The bar or block model is incredibly helpful for these situations and makes the problem solving a breeze.

This is a multi-step math word problem. I make a flowchart for it, to show the solution steps. And then of course we solve the problem, with the help of a bar model. :) Here are more videos of mine that focus on problem solving:

I solve this math word problem using a bar mode (Singapore math style): One rake is $5.60 more than the other, and together they cost $22.70. How much does the cheaper rake cost?

I solve this math word problem, using a bar (block) model "Singapore style": John spent 3/10 of his money, and had $45.57 left. How much did he have initially?
