The feud began when Orton was still very new to World Wrestling Entertainment but it helped kickstart his "Legend Killer" run while also showing that Randy could hang in there with the Hardcore Legend. The Cactus Jack vs Randy Orton match that took place at Backlash 2004 is still one of the very best hardcore wrestling matches the WWE ever produced, and it was a match that Mick Foley had wanted to do before he disappeared again from WWE progamming. The feud started all the way back in mid 2003 when Orton and Ric Flair attacked Foley in Madison Square Garden. Mick would return later in the year to face Randy on Raw, but Foley walked away from the bout and for the first time ever, a competitor had left a WWE main event match on live TV. The story would unfold in the months that followed, resulting in a WrestleMania match pitting The Rock 'n' Sock Connection against Evolution, and a gripping hardcore match at Backlash 2004 featuting Cactus Jack taking on Randy Orton.
