In this special conversation, Norm Sonju sits down with Rick Welts, CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, to reflect on the origins of the franchise and the people who helped shape it from the very beginning. Norm shares stories from the earliest days of building an NBA organization from scratch—what it took to bring professional basketball to Dallas, the challenges of launching a new franchise, and the relationships that defined the Mavericks’ foundation. From front-office decisions to behind-the-scenes moments, this conversation offers rare insight into how the Mavericks became who they are today. Rick Welts adds perspective on leadership, legacy, and why those early stories still matter to the organization’s identity decades later. This is a candid, thoughtful look at basketball history, organizational culture, and the human stories behind the Mavericks brand—told by two leaders who lived it.
