At 174, Iowa's Tyler Nixt scored the first points in his match against Nick Passolano after a scoreless first period. Nixt chose to begin the second period in the bottom position and scored an escape almost immediately. Nixt followed that up with a takedown to give himself a 3-0 lead. Nixt scored another takedown near the end of the second period after Passolano began to wrestle out of control. The takedown gave Nixt what appeared to be a commanding 5-1 lead heading into the final stanza. In the third period, Passolano chose down, and scored a reversal to narrow his deficit to 5-3. But Nixt was too much for Passolano, as he finished off Passolano with a powerful takedown. Passolano sprawled away from a Nixt shot, but Nixt worked up the body before lifting Passolano and throwing him down to the mat on his way to the 10-4 win.
