Publisher's Summary Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil. Elphaba is born with green skin, a precocious mind, and a talent for magic. An outcast throughout her childhood in Munchkinland, she finally begins to feel as though she fits in when she enters the University in the Emerald City. While she hones her skills, she discovers that Oz isn't the Utopia it seems. She sets out to protect its unwanted creatures, becoming known as the Wicked Witch along the way. Narrator John McDonough draws you in to Maguire's magical world of witches and talking animals, making it possible to believe in a land somewhere over the rainbow. ©1995 Gregory Maguire (P)2000 Recorded Books, LLC

Wicked
I had heard lots of good things about this, so i gave it a try.Uggh.Couldn't get through it.Painful to listen to.Go see the play.
I am shocked at some of the negative reviews!I wonder if people want cookie cutter novels that do not stretch their minds? This is a remarkably creative story. It dives into socio/political and religious avenues with a fantastical and mystical approach. This story took me on a thought provoking adventure and I enjoyed every minute of it!It is not a childrens story by any means (there are adult themes). The story does however remind me somewhat of Harry Potter books.I am listening to "Son of a Witch" now and the adventure continues.
This was a really great book to have read to me and my first ever audio book experience! I really enjoyed it. I think the narrator was wonderful and the story was intense. I really could feel Elphaba's emotions, especially her loneliness. She really got to me. I always knew she was misunderstood, even if a bit of a grump. Galinda was a priss and a snot who only became human briefly. NessaRose was just plain weird. I couldn't get her at all. Liir was a whimp of a boy. The Emporer of Oz was a meglomaniac if I ever saw one, and I enjoyed his dialouge. I loved Nanny and Chistery the winged monkey. Overall, it's good to know Elphaba had love with her pain in life. Who cares about Galinda and her pretty dresses! I have a new outlook on an old favorite now.
Couldn't even finish.Yawn!!!!
I thought this was one of the strangest stories I have ever heard! Odd plot line, nothing like I expected. The only reason I finished it is because I am going to see the play. I hope the play is better than the book, I paid $135 for my ticket!
The book has so much promise but ends up driving into a depressing dead end.It is as if the author loathed all the characters in the story and had no idea where to go with the tale. There is an attempt at cleverness and some good characterer development -- but it goes nowhere. One plot line after another is developed and then left uncompleted. The let down is wrsened by the fact that the reader invests so much time in the tale. Very poor book.
I am disappointed it this book.I only got into it 3 chapters and gave up on it.I did not expect the pornographic detail that was in the book. After talking to others who read or read at it.They had the same reaction. This title needs to come with a disclaimer so that unsuspectinglisteners don't purchase this title expecting something else. All I can say is BOOOO to the author, and BOOO to Audible for not including a disclaimer.
