The event would become the must financially succesful WCW pay per view show in company history with an extraordinary buy rate of 1.9. Fans were paying to see the in-ring return of Sting when The Icon took on nWo leader Hollywood Hogan in the main event. The Sting vs nWo rivalry had been building up ever since WCW questioned Sting's loyalties all the way back at Fall Brawl 1996. Sting became a reclusive character who would watch over the nWo from the rafters and this created a ton of anticipation for when the Stinger would finally come back to the ring. After around 15 months of build-up, WCW decided to book Sting vs Hollywood Hogan for Starrcade 1997, and fans couldn't wait to see the match. With a their largest PPV audience watching at home, WCW had to get this main event (and entire show) right.
