Well yet another politically correct mess wrapped up and packaged and missed as entertainment. I can say the 80s where far and wide a much better time than now (in general) people didn't take offence at literally anything and everything, horror comedies where funny, and well watching a film was entertaining not some very thinly veiled PC nonsense. We live in a word now where people are more afraid to be who they are than ever, speak their mind in public and risk being "cancelled" at every turn at least back then you can speak your mind and critsasim was acceptable part of society. In this film it seems to push all the usual inane content over any substance of entertainment. It seems to be a scene to set up the next out of control unacceptable circumstance for our main character to start screaming how unacceptable it is, to then jump to the next scene where she does the same, this is the movie, with a side of so called slasher type movie. Honestly that's what this movie is it is neither horror or comedy but someone's extremely skewed view on both the 80s and what is socially acceptable.
I really appreciate to create something different and original into the slasher/teen/ comedy world. The main idea here is great. I mean trying to mix movies like Back to the future with the classic 80's teens slashers is cool. But the execution, acting and the 80's interpretation are poor. First, the movie does not deliver any message. Looks like the script was written by a gen Z or someone not older than 21. Why they send the message that in the 80's everything was wrong? Second, acting is horrendous, but still watchable as many slashers. I am not sure if they think around the 80's people were d*mb, maybe a bit, but definitely not like the acting in this movie. Last, I grew up in the 80's watching Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw massacre. All four cult cIassics, and to be honest, the movie has nothing to do with the 80's slasher's spirit. Anyway, the movie is watchable but it could have been faaaaaaar better. A wasted opportunity to create a new great franchise.
Top marks for a fun concept that had a ton of potential. Failing marks for making the main character a smug PC police brigade member that sucks the fun out of every situation with her patronizing attitude towards the apparently backwards troglodytes that ran rampant in the 80s. The script was certainly written and/or heavily edited by someone who was born well after the 80s ended, and made it their mission to disparage the culture. Because it's not like society has ever regressed, and newer is always better right? There were tons of things wrong with society then as there still are, but come on this is supposed to be a mindless horror/comedy, not gender studies or political science class.
If you're looking for a movie with a lot of diversity, a couple gory kills, an attractive supporting cast, generally sharp cinematography, lots of poor CGI, a cute idea that never gets explored, poor comedy reliant on outdated stoner humor, an utterly unlikable protagonist, diversity, several sanctimonious jabs at the patriarchy and uncensored language, and diversity (did I mention the diversity?), then you'll absolutely love this movie. If you actually want a clever movie about someone going back in time to start a murder, a tense horror movie, or a hilarious self-conscious send-up, then you'll have to look elsewhere. This lazy and aggravating horror-comedy has a few great ideas sprinkled in (setting a trap for the killer in a fun house, a killing on a water bed sending plumes of water into the air, and the general premise) but unfortunately drops the ball every time. It is unfortunate that films (and film-reviewing) has become so intensely politicized. You're essentially either for "woke" horror movies like this or against them, and the people in love with this kind of movie are either too young to know better or do not seem to care about the qualities beyond the social messaging. I suppose it's a good thing that overt political messaging finds its way into poor films though because it associates 'the message' with poor quality. I guess that's the one bit of optimism to draw from a film such as this. Eventually people will tire of it and movies like this will seem as tired and outdated to regular people as they long have to me.
