The much-discussed experiment of Andrew Flintoff at No. 3 failed completely, while Paul Collingwood fought a lone battle, trying to marshal the lower order. The only resistance came through a 49-run sixth-wicket partnership between Collingwood and Ian Dalrymple, which was broken by off-spinner Ramesh Powar, effectively ending England’s hopes of a competitive total. India’s new-ball pair were outstanding. Munaf Patel and Irfan Pathan extracted swing, repeatedly beating the bat and forcing errors. England’s final total was at least 50 runs short of what was required on the surface. If England had any faint hopes, they disappeared instantly when Steve Harmison conceded 20 runs in his very first over of India’s chase. Although Harmison did remove Virender Sehwag during that over, the damage was already done. At the dinner break, India were cruising at 55 for 1 in just eight overs. India did stumble briefly later in the innings, including the dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar lbw to Harmison, but the result was never in doubt. As Rahul Dravid later pointed out, despite the official margin of victory being four wickets, the win was far more comfortable than it appeared on paper.
