Everyone watching sumo focuses on the wrestlers, but almost nobody pays attention to the referees standing in the ring with them, even though they follow a ranking system just as rigid and hierarchical as the wrestlers themselves. In this video, SumoSpirit breaks down the gyoji ranking system, explaining how referees climb through the ranks, what their different uniforms and titles actually mean, and why this entire structure remains one of the most overlooked parts of the sport. We dig into the training gyoji go through before ever stepping into the ring, the specific responsibilities that change as they move up in rank, and the traditions tied to their role that date back centuries. From the color of their fans to the swords some of them carry, this video reveals just how much detail and history is packed into a role most fans barely think about while watching a match. If you're a true sumo fan who wants to understand every part of the sport, not just the wrestlers, SumoSpirit is your channel. Like and subscribe so you don't miss the next deep dive!
