Stepmom

Was this film the result of a guilty conscience or just wishful thinking? The sweetness and light, caring and sharing tend toward the hypoglycemic end of the scale. Great acting, though! Sarandon, as usual, was superb. Julia Roberts was probably her best since Mystic Pizza. Ed Harris was the weakest of the cast, most likely due to the fact that he had an exceptionally unrealistic role to portray... the great guy who dumps his wife, gets her to condone his new relationship, then gets all the women in his life loving and hugging one another. Pretty heady stuff. Don't forget to avoid the candy counter on this one... it's far too sweet already.

i read the reviews here, but still i watched this movie. thank god i did not pay anything. it has no redeeming features. i pity the people who worked on it, but that's no reason to pretend this film has any good points. it is mere schmaltz. if you have no critical faculties whatsoever and are a sucker for bourgoeis sentimentality [an american, and female] you will probably have a good weep and vote for this as your all time favourite. however, if you have the possibility of watching any other movie than this one, grab it.

I'm a big fan of Chris Columbus movies. I've seen Home alone & Harry potter 1 & 2. They were all pretty good ! Most of Chris movies are my favorite. Susan Sarandon and Juila Roberts gave us a wonderful time in the movie. Liam Akien was cute to be a son of Susan. It's contains loves , family , Joy & sadness. When I watch this movie, I almost cry every minute. The one thing made me unpleasant was the picture so long. It could have been shorter. Enjoy watching Stepmom with your family ! Thank you very much Chris Columbus ! 6/10

This was a very enjoyable movie, which is no small feat considering there are two major flaws. The biggest problem is how formulaic this film is from start to finish. I'm sure that most viewers knew how the film would end (and how it would get there) about ten minutes into the picture. The other big problem is Susan Sarandon's character, a person who was easy to hate. However, even with these big mistakes and some other small ones, this is still a great movie. Julia Roberts was hugely appealing, Ed Harris and Sarandon were solid as always, and even the kids were quite effective. Plus, there were several humorous moments, and the sadder scenes were equally effective. I know that my review hardly reads like a glowing recommendation, but this really was an entertaining film, flaws and all.

You'd have to be really cold-blooded not to get choked up at a few points in this film, but it is shamelessly manipulative, subtle as a jackhammer exercise in excess. These characters are rich, spoiled and uninteresting, and you really don't care what happens to them. They live in beautiful homes (why couldn't they be REAL people?) and seem to have no problems except for the tension between Sarandon, Roberts and Jena Malone. It took five writers to come up with pap like this? Sarandon is much better than the material. It's a shame that she and Roberts, who were executive producers, settled for such TV-movie of the week material.

I shut this pandering piece of tripe off after trying to hang on for thirty minutes. There are many ways to tell this story, (remains of the day comes to mind) but they have chosen to make a soap opera out of real life issues. Take my advice give it a pass.

The movie was filled with good actors but it just didn't make it. The melodrama was overdone and it was too long for its simple plot. I was disappointed and very glad I hadn't talked my husband into coming with me. The thing that makes me laugh is that had it been a tv movie it would have been laughed at by the critics. As a multi-million dollar Hollywood extravaganza, the critics have tried hard to be kind. They've tried too hard, those who follow the hype will be quite disappointed and find it hard to sit through to the "one more tear" end.

A great and very sad movie with a great cast. Probably another Oscar nomination for Susan Sarandon as the mother. Julia Roberts has the clueless but trying hard stepmom role down perfectly. The kids in this movie are great as well. I hope to see more from them in future. Rating:10

I watched Stepmom on DVD because it came free with my player purchase. Although Roberts and Sarandon are good actresses, the bickering between the two women, and the kids' meanness made the first half of the movie hard to watch. And the second half was a bit "syrupy" for this 53-yr-old. Lightly recommended.
