He was the lone player invited to Beamer's office for a one-on-one chat about the future. At the end of the meeting Black decided to accept a preferred walk-on role with the Gamecocks over several scholarship offers from non Power Five schools. "I was the only person who got to do that," Black said of his private chat with Beamer. "At first I was thinking being a walk-on I'd have to come in and try to just earn a roster spot, but he wanted me to come in and try to compete for a role right away. And that just because I was a preferreed walk-on didn't mean I won't get the same opportunities as everybody else. Once he told me that I knew I could bet on myself and go compete and get to play."
