Night of the Living Dead

Tom Savini's update on George Romero's classic about a woman hiding in a farmhouse with several other people during a zombie invasion has gotten a facelift. For one, it's in color now and all the gore pops in a more lively fashion. Second, the way it handles the lead character of Barbara is vastly different from the way she was handled in the original film and Patricia Tallman is allowed room for a bit of character growth. Most of the big changes take place in the last half hour of the film where it really goes in its own direction.

The scary part about this movie is that it isn't even too far fetched anymore. I like this better than the original but that doesn't mean the original isn't better movie. I love Tom Savini and when he is involved in zombies it's a must watch for me. So if you are debating if you should watch his movie, or if you think that you seen it all before just remember this is where it all started. 10/10.

It is a sad state of affairs that George Romero, creator of Martin, and the classics Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead has sunk to "reinventing" his ground breaking horror film of the same name from the 1960's. The original "Night" was a riveting horror ride that at times could overwhelm the senses with it's violent imagery, though tame by todays standards. The remake is a lifeless rehash, that breaks no new ground in any direction. The plot and characters are basically the same, with the exception of Barbara, whose character in the original served only to scream and babble, is now transformed into a combination of Athena/Wonderwoman/Xena:Warrior Princess. The use of color as compared to the B&W original just highlights the latters superiority for this particular subject matter. It is difficult for most horror films to be compared to the original "Night", but even without considering the first film, this one is a journey into the inane.

Title of this review is a paraphrase of one I read on this page. It's a decent movie. Nothing special, but still good enough. Ofc. adding color to the movie rid it of any kind of atmosphere and feeling of dread, so forget about being scared and watch it for fun and Tony Todd's performance which made me laugh the whole way through. Don't get me wrong, it's a good performance, but it can be fun if you watch it as a"black guy in a horror movie" cliche. I'm not sure how I feel about the changed script, but it can pass. All in all, I recommend the movie. It's OK :) 7/10 Enjoy! ;)

Night of the Living Dead (1990) was the feature length directorial debut of Special F.X. master/Actor/Stuntman Tom Savini. He made a fun remake/ update of the seminal zombie/apocalyptic horror classic. Even though the film had a low budget, the effects were amazing. Tony Todd and Patricia Tallman play the leads whilst perennial cult villain Tom Towles co-stars as well. The film for the most part is a scene-for-scene redux with a few changes (that I found quite refreshing I might add). Some fans of the original have been critical of this movie for some reason. I was stoked when this movie came out and when I left the cinema I was satisfied with the end results. Tom Savini did very well and I hope he gets a chance to direct in the near future. Recommended for genre fans

Not quite as classic as Romero's original, but it's better than it has any reason to be and Savini's direction is strong. It tells the same story as the original, but the last act gets a major overhaul and its up to your own personal taste if you find it stronger or weaker than the original.
