I've had the honor to help a few elite UFC fighter and coaches in the past, and it has contributed their team's success. But if I'm being honest, I actually don't like doing it! It takes a lot of time and responsibility to contribute to the fate of any athlete, let alone a world class athlete. But I'm glad I've done a few, and this is one of the rare times I scouted an opponent. When MMA prospect Jeff Chan (MMA Shredded) asked me to scout his opponent out for him, I gladly accepted, especially knowing that his father had just passed. The game plan went perfectly as planned. As a martial artist, I have learned that a fighter's personality is a great predictor of their style and choices. After studying videos of Jeff's opponent talking and training, I concluded that he's the type of fighter to be aggressive and come out strong. I told Jeff that if he stays patient, an opening will most likely present itself. Because it's a southpaw vs. orthodox matchup -- focus on controlling the lead hand in order to counter snipe with the rear side chain. I said the rear punch and rear kick will pay off. Finally, keep the footwork active on the outside, because when the opponent charges, you will have a better angle for a clear line of attack with the rear side. All of these cues played to Jeff's strengths, as he has a style of active footwork, good eyes for counters, and a strong rear side attack with his hand and feet. Rest in peace uncle Chan.
