Publisher's Summary David Sedaris' new collection of essays - including live recordings! - tells a most unconventional life story. It begins with a North Carolina childhood filled with speech-therapy classes ("There was the lisp, of course, but more troubling than that was my voice itself, with its excitable tone and high, girlish pitch") and unwanted guitar lessons taught by a midget. From budding performance artist ("The only crimp in my plan was that I seemed to have no talent whatsoever") to "clearly unqualified" writing teacher in Chicago, Sedaris' career leads him to New York City and eventually, of all places, France. His move to Paris poses a number of challenges, chief among them his inability to speak the language. Arriving a "spooky man-child" capable of communicating only through nouns, he undertakes language instruction that leads him ever deeper into cultural confusion. Whether describing the Easter bunny to puzzled classmates or watching a group of men play soccer with a cow, Sedaris brings a view and a voice like no other to every unforgettable encounter. ©2000 by David Sedaris, All Rights Reserved (P)2000 by Time Warner AudioBooks, A Division of Time Warner Trade Publishing

David Sedaris is very entertaining. The audio is crisp and he delivers his performance very well --I never tired of listening to him.
I have long been waiting to read this book, and thought I would give it a listen instead. However, it was simply awful. There were parts that were somewhat funny (I did laugh out loud a few times) but as jokes started recycling in different formats, I grew disinterested. The combination of live telling and reading didn't help, nor did the fact there's no order or theme to the listen. It jumps around through time, location and style. Maybe the author forgot that he had written some of the things in an earlier story and rewrote them? Other things about him changed-- in one part he was obsessed with medical French, in another he was afraid to go to the doctor for fear of not understanding what they would tell him. I would not recommend this. I was very disappointed. It was bizarre and poorly executed.
If you could sum up Me Talk Pretty One Day in three words, what would they be?Amazing book! What did you like best about this story? That it was truthful, humor and if you really did enjoy the read you can learn something being a new mother.and i have... What does David Sedaris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?Inflection, humor... LOVE the tone of his voice. It's truthful and it's amazing when an author reveals himself. If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?Just maybe, Me Talk Pretty One Day??Any additional comments?Absolutely LOVE hearing David Sedaris and the way he reads his words.I do think that Santa Land diaries would have been slightly more enjoyable (if that's possible) if the over head announcements where done by David's voice and he was more intertwined. Overall... one of the major reasons i signed up for Audible.

The short story format was the best attributeAny additional comments? Some of the subject matter was uncomfortable
