Hamer looked sharp through the opening two rounds, but everything changed in the third when Ruiz Jr. detonated heavy shots to both the head and body. A series of crushing left hooks downstairs visibly broke Hamer’s resolve and erased his desire to continue. It marked the second time in under a year that Hamer retired on his stool. The 30-year-old also declined to go on in his December fight against Vyacheslav Glazkov after taking several hard blows. It may be a sign that the sport simply isn’t his calling.
