With Zenit Kazan as the winners of the Champions League since the 2013/2014 season, a 5th win in a row seemed inevitable, even with the swap of Earvin Ngapeth and Wilfredo Leon. Their opponents in the quarter-finals, Trefl Gdansk, were not even a playoff team in the Plusliga. Despite these lopsided odds, Gdansk played Kazan tough on their home turf, going 5 sets. And while many assumed a walkover in the next match in Saint Petersburg Kazan, Polish opposite Maciej Muzaj couldn't be stopped. Gdansk even had chances to send Kazan home completely in the 4th set.
