Fans attended the event to see hometown hero Shawn Michaels try to win the WWF Champioship back from Sycho Sid and fans would also witness the Royal Rumble match. Bret Hart and Steve Austin's rivalry gets pushed to the next level during the Royal Rumble match. Stone Cold enters at number 5 and he dominates the Royal Rumble, Bret Hart enters at 21 to a great ovation, but the match ending leaves a lot of fans confused when Austin jumps back into the ring after getting eliminated by the Hitman. The ending to the Royal Rumble would become the main driving storyline on Raw the following night. Other competitors in the 1997 Royal Rumble include Mil Mascaras, The British Bulldog, Terry Funk, Owen Hart, Rocky Maivia and Mankind.
