In this SumoSpirit special, we uncover many sumo rituals—from the thunderous shiko stomps and the salt purification to the solemn dohyō-iri—that reveal how Shinto beliefs shape every moment on the sumo dohyo and inside Tokyo’s Kokugikan. We break down the pre-bout sumo shikiri, the explosive tachiai, the rare sumo matta (false start), and the etiquette that every rikishi and wrestler follows.
