Even so, Lopez came away with a controversial split-decision victory in their 10-round fight at Madison Square Garden. One judge scored the contest 95–94 for Martin, while the other two favored Lopez 96–93 and 97–92. ESPN’s unofficial scorecard also had Martin edging it 95–94. Martin, 29, dictated the pace with a sharp jab and perfectly timed check hooks, including one that dropped Lopez in Round 2. A second knockdown in Round 7 was ruled a slip by the referee. “The decision shocked me,” Martin said, revealing he broke his nose in the opening round after an accidental head clash and fought while bleeding most of the night. “I won the fight clearly.
