Academy graduate Nico O’Reilly was the star of the show, heading both goals in the second half to give the Blues a deserved victory. James Trafford was the busier of the goalkeepers in the early exchanges, making a stunning triple save seven minutes in to first deny Kai Havertz and then Bukayo Saka twice. However, we grew into the match and were well on top by the time O’Reilly pounced on a Kepa Arrizabalaga spill to nod into an empty net. And it was two for City just five minutes later when O’Reilly met a floated Nunes cross to power into the far corner. Quite the weekend for O’Reilly, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday! The Premier League leaders threw it all at us after that, but a strong defence held firm to spark wild celebrations in the packed out blue half of Wembley. With nine League Cup triumphs in our history, only Liverpool have ever won this competition more while Pep Guardiola’s five successes is more than any other manager.
