This classic match happened at the 2006 Sao Paulo Championships. Team Brasa representative Demian Maia faced off with Rival Gabriel Napao Gonzaga. Although in different weight classes, both of these fighters went on to competing in the UFC the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Demian Maia is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, having been at the top of the game in both sports with titles such as World Cup Champion (BJJ – 2002 & 2003), ADCC Champion (submission wrestling – 2007) and two failed title attempts in the UFC’s middleweight (April 2010) and welterweight (July 2017) divisions. Demian is also known for having one of UFC’s longest successful submission win streaks (5). In the context of jiu jitsu history, Maia was at the heart of the early 2000’s Alliance Academy‘s turmoil, a case that ended in the team splitting, giving birth to the Brasa, TT and Master academies. Gabriel Gonzaga, commonly known as Napão, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Wander Braga, and a former professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter who competed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight belt in 2007. As a grappler, Napão gained notoriety when representing the Macaco Gold Team Academy during the early to mid-2000s, a time when he conquered an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) World Championship title (2006) as well as a silver medal at the ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club), two of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport.
